You asked for it , and here it is. If you remember in my last Vintage Video Game post , there was an obscure little game in my top 20 list called Elevator Action.I remember plopping down in front of my TV with a "Jumungous" ( inside joke lol)  bowl of fruity pebbles and getting in endless hours on this game.  I did a screen cast and recorded some of the gameplay for you all. It's a fun game. Here is some more info on this gem of a game.

Description
In the original version, the player assumes the role of a spy who infiltrates a building filled with elevators. He must collect secret documents from the building and traverse the 30 levels of the building using an increasingly complex series of elevators. The player is pursued by enemy agents who appear from behind closed doors. The player must outwit them via force or evasion. Successful completion of a level involves collecting all the secret documents and traversing the building from top to bottom. In the lower floors of the building, the elevator systems are so complex that some puzzle-solving skills are needed.

Gameplay
In the original version, the player assumes the role of Agent 17, codename: "Otto", a secret agent for an unspecified organization or government. As Otto, the player must "acquire" (steal) a series of secret documents from a tall building which Otto enters from the roof. Each room with a document is indicated by a red door. Otto must traverse the building's numerous levels via a series of elevators and escalators while acquiring the documents. After retrieving all the documents, Otto must escape via the getaway car in the basement of the building and thus progress to the next level of the game. As the player progresses through more levels, the enemy agents will begin to shoot more frequently, their bullets will travel more quickly, and they will begin to take evasive action to avoid being shot, either going down to a knee to avoid high bullets or dropping into a prone position to avoid bullets at a lower level, and they will sometimes shoot from this position as well.
While there is no visible timer, the player does not have unlimited time with which to complete each round. At some point, the game appears to enter into a hurry-up mode, as evidenced by the background tune changing to something with a quicker beat, giving the impression of time running out. The enemy agents become more aggressive, as if the game were being played at an even higher level. The last characteristic of this mode is that the elevator response to commands deteriorates somewhat; an up or down command is likely to experience a small bit of lag, making it difficult to get or keep the elevator moving to avoid enemy fire, which can be problematic, especially toward the bottom level.

Scoring System /Original Model
  • Retrieve secret documents = 500 points
  • Knock out an agent by falling light = 300 points
  • Crush an agent using elevator = 300 points
  • Knock out an agent by jumping/kicking = 150 points
  • Eliminate an agent by gun = 100 points
  • There is a 50 point bonus for shooting/kicking agents on the dark floors or when the lights are shot out.
  • Bonus points are given with completion of each round (1,000 points per round up to a maximum of 10,000 points)
An extra life is earned when player reaches 10,000 points.

Top 20 8 Bit Nintendo Games

I am really excited about this post, and have had a blast compiling all of the video footage together. I have compiled a list of what my favorite Nintendo 8 bit games where. And you are all like , what's an 8 bit Nintendo.  You probably had one and didn't know if you remember doing one of the following:

  • Blowing into your game cartridge and then putting it back in the console
  • Did the up up, down down , Left Right , Left Right, B A , B A Select Start trick on any Konami games

Sure there were alot of other gaming systems , but I love it more for nostalgic reasons ( and some of the games are actually fun to play.) Now , I am sure that your top 10 list may look a little different than mine , and that's totally cool :)

Here is a video compilation that I did with some of the start up screens, gameplay , etc , enjoy

So , lets go ahead and get started !

1. Adventures of Lolo 3

Adventures of Lolo 3Adventures of Lolo 3

This game was a big puzzle. It looked fairly simple , but don't let the cute graphics fool you , lol. I lost several nights of sleep trying to beat this game lol .

2. Bubble Bobble

Bubble BobbleBubble Bobble

I remember going to the bodega ( say it with me  bo-de-gah , lol)by my house and playing this with my brother Edwin , and my cousin Butchie, and we used to run through hella quarters playing this. It wasn't until a little later that I got the game for my Nintendo and played it till the wee hours of the morning.

3. Cobra Triangle

Cobra TriangleCobra Triangle

Ride around in a sooped up boat and blast your enemies.

4.Commando

CommandoCommando

The graphics on this game were at best "So-So' , but that didn't stop me from playing it (I mean 8 bit was king back in the 80's so this was as good as it got but still lol)

5.Contra

ContraContra

Whoo hoo !!! I had a blast playing this one. Do you remember the code for the 30 lives ? UP UP, DOWN DOWN , LEFT RIGHT , LEFT RIGHT, B A B A , Select Start. ( you have to do it at the title screen ). This game was ( is ) awesome. The weapons where cool , and if you where on 2 player mode you could always snag one of the other players men ,lol. ( my bro hated when I did that lol)

6.Elevator Action

Ride up and down on an elevator shooting spies , getting secret documents , and riding away in your sports car. Lmao at how may times I would let the elevator crush me lol.

7.Excite Bike

This game was actually released back in 1984 for the Famicon gaming system in Japan.  You play as a motocrss stud trying to rank first in the races.

8.Gradius

GradiusGradius

This game was also bad ass. And of course ,  if you played you knew that you could also do the "Contra Code" here. Let the game start, pause it , and then enter the UP UP, DOWN DOWN , LEFT RIGHT , LEFT RIGHT, B A B A , Select Start ,  and you will start the game off with full shields , and weapons upgrades.

9. Jackal

JackalJackal

Rescue POW's, take down the baddies with your grenades and your Rocket Launcher.

10. Kung Fu

The most memorable thing about this game was after you were defeated you would hear this creepy laughter in the background lol. You play as Kung Fu master Thomas , trying to rescue your girlfriend Sylvia from the heinous Mr. X .

11. Legend of Zelda

The Legend of ZeldaLegend of Zelda

This was one of the first games that came out that had an internal battery for your  game saves. Loved that gold case

12. Mega Man 6

Mega Man 6Mega Man 6

Well,  too be fair I am a Mega Man fan for sure , but this was my favorite form the others . Graphics were much better . and the game play was alot more fluid. Not to mention all of the new bosses and power ups in the game.

13. Mendel Palace

Mendel PalaceMendel Palace

To be honest , I'm not really sure what the point of this game was , but I do remember spending hours , upon hours playing this thing.

14. Mike Tysons Punch Out !

I remember one late night my bro was playing this game and he had passed a really hard level , and then , the screen started blinking. No kidding , he got up , threw a tantrum, and started cursing out the Nintendo lol … And then of course he started blowing into the game cartridge.

16. Sky Kid

Not sure why I liked this game so much , I just did.

17. Super Mario Brothers 3

Super Mario Bros

This game broke the Mario Mold. ( well , really the same could be said for Super Mario Bros. 2 , but thats another story). The graphics were bight and vivid , really making use of all 8 bits . Remember the Tanooki suit ?  Mario Tanooki Suit

18. Twin Cobra

Twin CobraTwin Cobra

This is a pretty obscure game , but rocks none the less.

19. The Legend of Zelda : Links Adventure

The Adventure of Link The Adventure of Link

The music to this game was a masterpiece . The graphics , all the cool power ups. I remember buying a Nintendo Power Magazine so that I could see the map of the whole Legend of Zelda world ( I was trying to et to Ganon and it was taking forever lol)

20. Rad Racer

Rad RacerRad Racer

This game made use of 3D , and actually shipped with 3D glasses. You would press select on your controller , and then the screen would go all red and blue on you , but it was cool !!!  The controls for this game were off the hook.

These games receive an honorable mention :

  • Super Mario Bros 2 ( it was a good game , just didn't have as much of an impact on me when compared to SMB 3)
  • Batman : Return of The Joker
  • Double Dribble
  • Blaster Master
  • Dig Dug
  • Spy Hunter ( 1 & 2 )

There are many more games that I could have added on to this list , but these were my favorites.  Recognize any of these games ?

Shout it out, and let us know !!!

Vintage Video Games – New Category

Written by on June 30, 2010 in Vintage Video Games - 4 Comments

So , not many people know this ( well except the wife, lol) but I am a video game junkie. No , not one of the run of the mill Call of Duty junkies . I am a different breed. I grew up playing colecovision ,  commodore 64, Nintendo 8Bit ( remember when you had to blow in the cartridge for the game to play properly ?) Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx , Neo Geo. I could go on and on , but I won't.

I remember countless hours of playing Super Mario Brothers 3

Super Mario Brothers 3 - Skyworld

And playing Contra ( remember' the code that gave you the 30 lives? up up , down down , left right, left right , B A, B A, select Start )

Contra for Nintendo 8 Bit

I recently started replaying these games actively because playing them rids me of my childhood ( I a giving way my age by that statement aren't I  lol)

I guess you could say this is me doing an introduction to a new category that I added to my blog -"Vintage Video Games". Basically , I will be doing some reviews on some old school games to see if they can stand the test of time and are worth replaying . I will also be doing reviews on the platforms as well

I am still debating on which gaming platform I am going to start with first. ( there is a poll down below , maybe you all can help me figure it out ??? )

And here are the candidates … drum roll please ………….

Nintendo ( 8bit)

Nintenfo 8 Bit

Sega Master System

Sega Master System

Sega Genesis ( first  generation )

Sega Genesis - First Generation

Sega CD

Sega CD

Sega 32 X

Sega 32X

So , what  I need from you all is to help me figure out which gaming console to start my review on.

For now , I will be reviewing games from these consoles. ( later on , I will do the NEO GEO , Lynx , etc)  Until then , happy gaming !!!
