5 ways to increase your page rank

This is one of the questions that I get asked alot by some of my clients , and so , I decided to write do a quick wrtie up on this topic. There are way more than 5 ways to increase your page rank ( however I am only going to cover 5 of them ).

What is Page Rank , and Why Do I want it ?

Google describes PageRank:[4]
PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.

1. SHARE YOUR CONTENT VIA YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS

You have written a great article, so why not spread the word ? By using social networks ( Twitter, Facebook, and of course Google+, you can spread your news \ article to a much larger audience. and in turn,  increase the likelihood of someone retweeting your link , or even linking back to you. What does that mean ? Increaasing your visibility to a network of people you previsouly would not have access to

Social Networking

2. USE APPROPRIATE KEYWORDS  (keyword stuffing is a Big Google no-no)

Keyword Stuffing

Some people have the notion that the more keywords they "stuff" in their meta tags the better. In theory that sounds right , but  that could be further from the truth. Google frowns upon this practice , and could penalize your site ( by taking away whatever page rank you have and even pulling your website from the search engine).   Using clear, accurate keywords for your web site is very important. When adding keywords for your page \ website, please keep the following points in mind

  • Using clear, accurate keywords for your web site is very important.
  • The words you use as your keywords will determine how you are found.
  • Use only keywords that are distinctly related to the main focus of your web site.
  • Using the same keywords does not increase your relevancy.
  • Avoid using keywords that are too vague or too specific.
  • You are found by any coombination of the keywords you choose.
  • Changing your keywords often increases your visibility.
  • Do not use names of other companies in order to capitalize on their existing exposure.
  • Use only one word per "Keyword Field." No spaces or punctuation are allowed.

Here is an example of the proper use of keywords
Exotic Gift Baskets, Inc. sells gift baskets which contain exotic coffees, candies, nuts and flowers. Their claim to fame is a line of gift baskets known as "Quick Baskets," which they can usually ship within 6 hours. The corporate office is based in New York and ships to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. The majority of their business is done during the holiday season.

Examples of good and bad Keywords for a listing:

Good Keywords:

  • gifts
  • baskets
  • exotic
  • quick
  • flowers
  • unique
  • Christmas

Bad Keywords:

  • free – (Using the word "free" is misleading)
  • Starbucks – (Do not use other company names unless authorized and relevant)
  • FTD – (Do not use other company names unless authorized and relevant)
  • Web – (Too vague and not directly related)
  • chrysanthemums – (Too specific and not directly related)

3. Include Signatures

John Hancock - Christian Martell

Including signatures whenever you post is a great way to get backlinks to your site. After posting a comment on a forum, a website ,etc. Here is an example:

John Doe

john.doe@email.com

http://www.johndoe.com

to easy right ?

4. Submit Your Website To Search Engines

Search Engines

Submit to search engine directories. Search engine directories are a good way to get a free link to your website. They also increase your chances at being listed higher on popular search engines like Google, and overture.
Most search engine directories allow you to submit to their website for free. This will allow you to increase your web presence by being listed on another search engine, and it will also be a free link.
Remember the more links you have the higher your PR will be.

Here are some links that you can submit your website to get you started :
Google
Yahoo

5. RSS FEEDS – ( Rich Site Summary)

Search Engines

RSS is also known as Really Simple Syndication. JISC describes RSS as “a lightweight XML format for distributing news headlines and other content on the Web.”

In addition to making it easy for other sites to distribute your headlines and content, your RSS feed will be indexed by popular Blog search engines, including Technorati, BlogSearch, and Ask.com Bloglines.

As I mentioned , there are tons of ways to increase your Page Rank, what are some methods you use ?

New analytics tools should drive even more businesses into social media use

Twitter Analytics tools - Christian Martell

A few weeks back, Twitter announced the release of a new web analytics tool that will allow webmasters and businesses to begin tracking the traffic that is driven in by the popular social networking tool. Twitter has grown into one of the largest social media services on the planet with over 100 million users worldwide and it will continue to grow in the corporate landscape with new tools such as this.
Up until the announcement from Twitter a few weeks back, the landscape for tracking and crunching statistics tied to social media platforms has generally been a tough go. Even though analytics tools grow at a good pace, the social media realm is growing at an exponential rate currently. This makes it hard for analytics tools to keep pace. In the past, these platforms of social media have had to rely on outside vendors to get any type of data to comeback. Now that there is an official social media platform analytics tool, expect other platforms to follow suit.

The twitter tool will help site owners and webmasters understand the total amount of traffic that is being driven in through the social network. This new tool is related to Twitter’s acquisition of BackType earlier this year, a web designed program for exploring the effect of tweeting. An initial round of the analytics service was rolled out this past week to a small division of partners and then a full release is expected in the next couple of weeks.

Having a tool like this will be a great attractor for businesses on the fence about embarking into the social media landscape. Even though most seem to be up on the trend, there are still some businesses clinging to their non-tech personality. Tools like these will give businesses an easier way to track their success through social media, making it more appealing for bosses who are number and goal hungry. One would expect the other social media platforms to develop similar tools with their own branding in the near future and this will only drive more businesses in as well.

The Twitter analytics tool is just one of the great examples of growth and trends in digital marketing and social media analytics in 2011. Data tracking for social media platforms has become one of the most talked about trends in digital marketing, as well as other growing tools such as mobile development, tag management and anomaly detection.

As the importance of a digital presence becomes more pervasive in the coming years, expect the last handful of businesses to truly hop onto to the ideal of having a total online presence. As small tools such as social media analytics make things easier for the business owners and users, they will only continue to drive more and more people into the world of digital marketing.

What is a Sitemap , and Why Is It Important ?

Written by on March 10, 2010 in SEO - 10 Comments

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

Here is a sample of what a sitemap should look like :

Sitemap, Christian Martell

While some developers argue that site index is a more appropriately used term to relay page function, web visitors are used to seeing each term and generally associate both as one and the same. However, a site index is often used to mean an A-Z index that provides access to particular content, while a site map provides a general top-down view of the overall site contents.Contents [hide]

Benefits of sitemaps

Site maps can improve search engine optimization of a site by making sure that all the pages can be found. This is especially important if a site uses a dynamic access to content such as Adobe Flash or JavaScript menus that do not include HTML links.

They also act as a navigation aid [1] by providing an overview of a site's content at a single glance.

Most search engines will only follow a finite number of links from a page, so if the number of links is very large, the site map may be required so that search engines and visitors can access all content on the site.

XML Sitemaps

Google introduced Google Sitemaps so web developers can publish lists of links from across their sites. The basic premise is that some sites have a large number of dynamic pages that are only available through the use of forms and user entries. The Sitemap files can then be used to indicate to a web crawler how such pages can be found. Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask now jointly support the Sitemaps protocol.

Since Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and Google use the same protocol[2], having a Sitemap lets the four biggest search engines have the updated page information. Sitemaps do not guarantee all links will be crawled, and being crawled does not guarantee indexing. However, a Sitemap is still the best insurance for getting a search engine to learn about your entire site.

XML Sitemaps have replaced the older method of "submitting to search engines" by filling out a form on the search engine's submission page. Now web developers submit a Sitemap directly, or wait for search engines to find it.

XML (extensible markup language) is much more precise than HTML coding. Errors are not tolerated, and so syntax must be exact. It is advised to use an XML syntax validator such as the free one found at: http://validator.w3.org

There are automated XML site map generators available (both as software and web applications) for more complex sites.

Breakdown of Robots.txt

Written by on March 5, 2010 in SEO - No comments

About /robots.txt

Web site owners use the /robots.txt file to give instructions about their site to web robots; this is called The Robots Exclusion Protocol.

It works likes this: a robot wants to vists a Web site URL, say http://www.example.com/welcome.html. Before it does so, it firsts checks for http://www.example.com/robots.txt, and finds:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

The "User-agent: *" means this section applies to all robots. The "Disallow: /" tells the robot that it should not visit any pages on the site.

There are two important considerations when using /robots.txt:
robots can ignore your /robots.txt. Especially malware robots that scan the web for security vulnerabilities, and email address harvesters used by spammers will pay no attention.
the /robots.txt file is a publicly available file. Anyone can see what sections of your server you don't want robots to use.

So don't try to use /robots.txt to hide information.

The /robots.txt is a de-facto standard, and is not owned by any standards body. There are two historical descriptions:
the original 1994 A Standard for Robot Exclusion document.
a 1997 Internet Draft specification A Method for Web Robots Control

In addition there are external resources:
HTML 4.01 specification, Appendix B.4.1
Wikipedia – Robots Exclusion Standard

The /robots.txt standard is not actively developed. See What about further development of /robots.txt? for more discussion.

The rest of this page gives an overview of how to use /robots.txt on your server, with some simple recipes. To learn more see also the FAQ.
How to create a /robots.txt file
Where to put it

The short answer: in the top-level directory of your web server.

The longer answer:

When a robot looks for the "/robots.txt" file for URL, it strips the path component from the URL (everything from the first single slash), and puts "/robots.txt" in its place.

For example, for "http://www.example.com/shop/index.html, it will remove the "/shop/index.html", and replace it with "/robots.txt", and will end up with "http://www.example.com/robots.txt".

So, as a web site owner you need to put it in the right place on your web server for that resulting URL to work. Usually that is the same place where you put your web site's main "index.html" welcome page. Where exactly that is, and how to put the file there, depends on your web server software.

Remember to use all lower case for the filename: "robots.txt", not "Robots.TXT.

See also:
What program should I use to create /robots.txt?
How do I use /robots.txt on a virtual host?
How do I use /robots.txt on a shared host?
What to put in it
The "/robots.txt" file is a text file, with one or more records. Usually contains a single record looking like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /~joe/

In this example, three directories are excluded.

Note that you need a separate "Disallow" line for every URL prefix you want to exclude — you cannot say "Disallow: /cgi-bin/ /tmp/" on a single line. Also, you may not have blank lines in a record, as they are used to delimit multiple records.

Note also that globbing and regular expression are not supported in either the User-agent or Disallow lines. The '*' in the User-agent field is a special value meaning "any robot". Specifically, you cannot have lines like "User-agent: *bot*", "Disallow: /tmp/*" or "Disallow: *.gif".

What you want to exclude depends on your server. Everything not explicitly disallowed is considered fair game to retrieve. Here follow some examples:
To exclude all robots from the entire server
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

To allow all robots complete access
User-agent: *
Disallow:

(or just create an empty "/robots.txt" file, or don't use one at all)
To exclude all robots from part of the server

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /junk/
To exclude a single robot
User-agent: BadBot
Disallow: /

To allow a single robot

User-agent: Google
Disallow:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

To exclude all files except one
This is currently a bit awkward, as there is no "Allow" field. The easy way is to put all files to be disallowed into a separate directory, say "stuff", and leave the one file in the level above this directory:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /~joe/stuff/
Alternatively you can explicitly disallow all disallowed pages:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /~joe/junk.html
Disallow: /~joe/foo.html
Disallow: /~joe/bar.html

Working with the robots.txt file is fairly straight forward , however , here is a link to a site that will auto generate one for you with some added features .

What is SEO ?

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

What is SEO ?

Search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, provide a way for Internet users to find what they want from the hundreds of millions of web pages that make up the World Wide Web. Just being discovered on your own is almost impossible.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a process designed to ensure that your web site lists as high as possible in each of these search engines.

To build their database of web sites, the search engines use "spider" programs to automatically crawl the web and then index the web sites that they find. The search engines then use a complex set of rules to prioritise these sites based on relevance to the search terms or phrases entered by visitors when they perform a search.

Being Visible

Many web sites rank very poorly, if not at all, because their content is effectively hidden from the search engines due to search-engine-unfriendly design. What might look pretty, might not spider very well. You also need to layout your site in ' search-engine-friendly' ways, write the content on your web site in 'search-engine-friendly' ways and establish links with other web sites in order to improve your ranking on the major search engines.

Competition Achieving a high search-engine ranking is made even more difficult by the fact that everyone else is trying to get their site listed on the front page of Google, Yahoo! and MSN as well. The amount of work required to achieve a front-page listing is dependant on the level of competition that you face for specific keywords or phrases. If your competitors optimise their web site more effectively than you do they will out rank you and will get more traffic to their website. It is estimated that 90% of traffic goes to sites listed on the first page of a search listing. to

SEO Madness – What it is and How To Avoid the Hype

Written by on February 23, 2009 in SEO - No comments

Welcome to all , this is my first entry and boy is it a doozy . In this post I will try and demystify SEO , and The Madness behind it . For Starters , what is SEO ? This is what the wonderful , all knowing peopleat wikepeid had to say : "Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" ) search results. Typically, the higher a site's "page rank" (i.e, the earlier it comes in the search results list), the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. " Alot of people ask me to help them increase the traffic on there page . With SEO , there is no such thing as " A Quick Fix " . There many things that can be done to increase your visibility on the web , as well as ensure that your page pops up when it needs to ( when doing a search on google, yahoo, etc ) there is no *guarantee that your website will pop up on the first page when doing a search .. ( well actually there is , but I'll get to that later ) You may also come across alot of websites that claim that they can get you ranked within 48-72 Hours . If you have the money to burn with the way this economy is going , then be my guest , just expect a reoccurring charge the following month when your website is back to where it started . SEO is a very broad topic of discussion , so for now I will just focus on one , which is the method that I use the most and that is "Organic SEO " . Organic SEO in a nutshell is basically doing everything by the book . Dotting all your i's and making sure that everything is meets web standards . Alot of things determine your page rank , and the likelihood of you coming up first on google ( or alteast on the first page ) . Let's say for example that you have a company that creates dog collars made of licorice and you are based out of Lawton Oklahoma . ( yes mthat is very far fetched but just follow along with me ) . If you type in Licorice dog collar and Oklahoma , chances are , you will be the only person coming up on that search ( unless you know of any other people that make licorice dog collars , lol) . Licorice dog collars is not a common thing , and so coming up in first place on a google search or a yahoo search would be no contest becasue that is unique content . Now let's take the same company , same location , and you sold regular dog collars .You would more than likely not be in first place , or even on the first page . The reason for that is becasue you are now competing with other people that are doing the same thing as you . So you ask , " What can I do to increase my visibility ?" . Here are some basics for you to get started .

  • Writing posting quality material on your website that is relevant to what your website is about .
  • Using Keywords that are relevant to your site
  • Meta Tags ( this is somethign that is debateable among web designers , but personallly I implement them because I feel that it is better to have and not need , than not have at all )

This is a picture of what meta tags are exactly . ( this is also a demonstration of what not to do when using meta tags )

  • Sitemaps ( very important )

What keywords to use ? Meta Tags ? That is a completely different blog , lol … I'm out like 3 strikes . Christian
