How To: Defragment Your Computer

Written by on January 6, 2011 in How To - 4 Comments

defragment

If your PC (personal computer)  is running as fast as molasses, then you may need to defragment ( defrag) your system. You don't need a PHD to do it , and your computer will run alot smoother.

Understand why you should defrag a PC. When you add and delete files to a PC, the hard drive becomes fragmented, which results in a PC running sluggishly because it is operating in a less efficient manner. Defrag a PC regularly in order to keep it running more efficiently.

2

Start menu

Start menu

Open the My Computer window. To do this on a PC, click on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen. Then, click "My Computer".

3

MyComputer window

MyComputer window

Choose the hard disk drive you want to defrag. Locate the section entitled “Hard Disk Drives.” In this section is a list of hard drives on the PC. For most PC's, the hard disk drive you will want to defrag is Local Disk (C:).

4

Menu bar

Menu bar

Right-click on the hard disk drive you want to defrag. If you want to defrag your C: drive, then right-click on "Local Disk (C:)". A menu bar will appear.

5

Properties window

Click on “Properties.” “Properties” is the last option on the menu bar. This opens the Local Disk (C:) Properties window.

6

Tools tab

Click the Tools tab. The Tools tab is the second tab in the Local Disk (C:) Properties window. The tabs are located on the top of the window.

7

Click the “Defragment Now” button. The “Defragment Now” button is in the Defragmentation section of the window. This opens the Disk Defragmenter window.

8

Click to select the disk drive you want to defrag on a PC and then click “Defragment.” For most PC’s, this will be (C:). After you click “Defragment,” the PC will first analyze the disk drive you selected and then beginning defragging the PC.

9

Completion message

Completion message

Wait for the “Defragmentation is Complete” message. If you have not defragged the PC in a long time, then the defragging process might take a while, even as long as an hour for very fragmented PCs. Allow the PC to run the defrag until the process is completed. You will know that the PC has completed the defrag process when the “Defragmentation is Complete” message appears.

10

Defrag report

Defrag report

View the defrag report and then close the window. If you want to view the defrag report, click “View Report.” Otherwise, click “Close” to close the window.

Just a few side notes :

  • It is a good idea to run an error check before running a defrag on a PC. While running an error check is not necessary in order to defrag a PC, running an error check is another PC maintenance task that should be completed as frequently as the PC is defragged.

  • Defrag a PC on a regular basis. Ideally, you should defrag a PC at least weekly.

  • The more frequently you defrag a PC, the less time the defrag process will take. The defrag process can take a significant amount of time on a PC that has not been defragged in a while.

Synch Google and Outlook

My father is a creature of habit. Former Blackberry user gone HTC Evo,Sprint Evo and a recovering Netzero addict, now using Gmail ( although he doesnt like it because the interface is a little cluttered lol) .Addicted to Netzero

And of course his love for Microsoft Outlook. He wanted to somehow synch his Outlook with his gmail account.

By default , when you purchase an Android phone , you have to create a Gmail account , which allows you to synch your contacts , your notes , calendars , etc. My dad is an old school kind of guy , and is not impressed with the Google Calendar , and wanted to stick with his Outlook.  Here is a quick guide on how to make your Gmail and Outlook Calendar play nice with one another .

Play nice

To set up Google Calendar Sync:

  1. Make sure you're using a supported operating system and Outlook version.
  2. Download Google Calendar Sync (version 0.9.3.6) at http://dl.google.com/googlecalendarsync/GoogleCalendarSync_Installer.exe
  3. Once a dialog box appears, click Save File. The downloaded file should open automatically. If it doesn't, manually open it from your browser's download window.
  4. Click OK to confirm that you're aware this is an executable file.
  5. Read through the Google Calendar Sync Terms of Service, and click I Agree.
  6. Follow through the Installation Options and click Install to finish the set-up process.

Once Google Calendar Sync is installed on your computer, the Google Calendar Sync Settings window will appear:

In the Settings window, enter your email address and password and select the Sync Option you prefer. Read about each Sync Option.

You'll also be able to set the time interval for syncing to occur. Please keep in mind that 10 minutes is the minimum time interval allowed.

After the initial set-up, you can access the Google Calendar Sync Settings window again by double-clicking the calendar icon in your Windows System Tray.

Icon Status

To access the Google Calendar Sync Settings window, just right-click the calendar icon in your Windows System Tray and select Options.

Written by on December 1, 2010 in How To - 1 Comment

UnDLL DLL Remover

Virus Alert

Viruses are becoming more and more elusive as new technologies roll out. Long gone are the days of the simple "pop-ups" that would appear at random on your desktop encouraging you to download software that would "cure" your computer from the virus. Removing an infected DLL file can be a little tricky , especially if it attaches itself , or replaces one of the core dll files used. Removing Infected DLL is also much more difficult since most of the time this DLL’s gets loaded into system as soon as you reboot.  Here are two utilities that can hep you out which suppose to help you in such situations.

1. UndLL: The DLL Remover    -

UnDLL DLL Remover

This is my personal favorite from the 3  on this list. Very straight forward to use , and easy to understand.

2. SPYDLL Remover

spy dll remover

Spy DLL Remover is the standalone tool to effectively detect and delete spywares from the system. It comes with advanced spyware scanner which quickly discovers hidden Rootkit processes as well suspicious/injected DLLs within all running processes. It not only performs sophisticated auto analysis on process DLLs but also displays them with various threat levels, which greatly helps in quick identification of malicious DLLs. The DLL search feature helps in finding DLL within all running processes using just partial or full name. Then user can choose to remove the dll from single process or from all loaded processes with just one click.

What is Rss ?

rss

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  The RSS icon on the toolbar at the bottom of this page is the site feed for this website ChristianMartell.com

Sometimes websites tend ot have their Rss feeds in different places . If you come to a website , and would like to subscribe to the feed, the easiest thing to do would be ( the screenshot below was taken using the Firefox Browser ) is to look the address bar in your browser.
If the site has a feed you will see the following : ( note the red circle )

What is Rss - ChristianMartell.com

There’s a lot of techno babble about Rss that I could write about , but I won't. All you need to know is that RSS allows you to track your favorite blogs and websites in one location – an RSS Reader.

An RSS Reader like Google Reader allows you to add various websites and blogs that offer their RSS Feed for you to track by category.

There are many RSS Readers out there to choose from. I currently use Google Reader. Here’s just a few RSS Readers which include Windows versions as well as Apple versions and online web-based:

There are a quite a few RSS Readers and a Google search on RSS Readers will provide you with more to choose from.

If this RSS thing doesn’t sound right for you and you want to make it even easier to receive content from your favorite blogs and websites, then subscribe by email if the website or blog offers that service. If you hang out in your email reader then that is an excellent way to keep your favorite content centralized.

You should be on your way now to being an Rss rockstar,  Now , click here to subscribe to this blog

Another Installation in Progress Windows Error Message

Written by on July 8, 2010 in How To - 1 Comment

Christian Martell

So I was working on a clients site and I needed to edit some pdf's. The editor I use ( Nitro PDF Proffesional ) Had an update available , so I thought I would go ahead and help myself to the free update. I downloaded the program and went to run the install.

However the installer gave me this error message  "Another Installation in Progress error 1500".

I have had this headache before and I thought I would share a quick fix for it.

Right-click on the Computer icon, wherever it exists on your system, and select Manage. This opens the Computer Management utility.

Select Services, right click on Windows Installer in the list and select Properties. If you’re having the problem, the Windows Installer service is started, and the Stop button is disabled. Simply rebooting doesn’t stop the service. Here’s how you stop it.

In the Properties dialog, change Startup type to “Disabled”, click OK, and reboot your computer. This stops the service. After your computer reboots, again open Computer Management (right-click on Computer and select Manage), open Windows Installer Properties, and change the Startup type back to Manual. Now you’re good to go and can start a new installation.

Tada :)
