Opera Mini 5 beta comes to the Google Android platform

Once upon a time ago I was a heavy sidekick aficionado.

I would find ways of hacking, slicing and dicing the programs and innards to see if I could boost performance. It was a little frustrating though because the usb port was only for developers, so I had to hack a connection into it (but that’s another blog post all together )

Then I was introduced to the fabulous world of the Blackberry. I reworked it and made it into a crackberry  ( google it , lol ) . I would edit lines of code and then modify the programs to my using  the Blackberry SDK it  and once I was satisfied testing it locally , I would load the program onto my 7520 ( see pic ,

lol … the first smart phones used to be humongous  and presto , homemade software .

Fast forward today. I am the proud owner of an Android G1 ,

and I love it . One of the coolest things about this phone is that the programming is open source so any one with the know how can brew together a great app .Today, we see the launch of another alternative web browser that I have spent a few hours using on my G1. Opera announced Opera Mini 5 for the Google Android platform this morning. Opera has two mobile browsing solutions, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, with Opera Mini being a server-based solution that gives you a very fast and cost/data efficient browser. There are currently over 50 million users of Opera Mini across a broad spectrum of mobile devices and this Android version is just the latest.

I was sent an early preview of this browser solution and am very pleased with its performance and capabilities. As I have mentioned before, I particularly like the Opera Link feature that lets me sync my bookmarks across desktop web browser and mobile devices for a consistent web browsing experience. You will find Opera Mini 5 on Android supporting Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, password manager, full screen browsing, and more. It looks and performs very well on the large display of the G1
