Trouble Arranging Page Order in WordPress ?

Written by on May 31, 2010 in Wordpress - No comments

From time to time , I make additions , or revisions to my site , and of course then comes the arduous task of rearranging the page order . ( for aesthetic reasons you don't want your contact page to be the first on the navigation bar , etc ) By default , the lovely people at wordpress have provided you the option to rearrange your page order by simply assigning it a number , and every page after that with a number until the pages are in the order that you want them in. Ohm, and god forbid you have sub-pages m ( nightmare)

However , certain templates don't play nice with that feature , and when you can get it to work ,it sometimes gives you undesirable results.

Step into the My Page Order plugin. This plugin once installed , allows you to do move the pages around with a very simple to use "WYSIWYG" type panel. Just rearrange the pages in the order that you want them , and presto , your navigation is changed.

Here is a screen shot of what the plugin looks like after it has been activated.

my page order

To access , simply click on "My page Order" , and then you will be taken to this screen

in the panel

Simply rearrange the Pages by dragging them to where you would like them. . When you are done , press "Click to Order Pages"

If you notice , there is also an option that allows you to re-order any subpages that you may have. ( very nice ) .

And that's it. This plugin takes the guess work out of arranging your wordpress pages.

How to Add Google Analytics to Your Blogger Page

Written by on May 25, 2010 in How To - 9 Comments

google-analytics-ss1

I figured that I would do a quick tutorial on this since the information that is floating around on the net is either totally off, or incomplete.

I was going to take some screenshots of the process , but it is easy enough to do without them. ( maybe in the future I will add some pics

  1. Create a Google Analytics Profile by going here www.google.com/analytics
  2. After you create your login , you will recieve the code to add to your blogger page.It will look like this -

<script type="text/javascript">

  var _gaq = _gaq || [];
  _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-4331566-8']);
  _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

  (function() {
    var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
    ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
    var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
  })();

</script>

Take note of where the lettering is bold – That is refered to as a UA ( your web property id). That is how google distinguishes your page distinguishes your page from other pages.)

3. Login to your blogger blog and do the following :

  • Click on Layout
  • Right beneath Layout , you will the following tabs :
  • Page Elements      Fonts and Colors  Edit Html     Pick New Template

Click on Edit Html

You will be presented to a prompt with the HTML code for your Blogger Site. You are looking for a tag at the very end of the coding that says </body>

( the easiest way of doing this is by pressing control+F. That will show you a search form, just type in </body> and you will be shown where you need to place the UA code.

Copy  and Paste the code Google gave you right before </body>

Click on Save Template.

Congratulations , you are done. Keep in mind that it usually takes up to 24hours before Google starts taking stats for your website.

If you have any questions , or issues, feel free to let me know .

Foursquare, Twitter – Security Implications via GPS Geotagging

Written by on May 24, 2010 in Social Networks, Twitter - 2 Comments

Smartphone apps add location posting data ( sites such as Twitter , Foursquare , and Loopt use geotagging technology to post information about where you are . These apps are great to see what's happening in the area, but pose a serious security risk.

Let's use Foursquare for example

- Foursquare is an app that allows users to broadcast to all of there friends ( via the twitter and Facebook synching that is done when you first create an account ) When a Foursquare user reaches a certain location , ( real world ) , your gps sends a message to Foursquare , and then forwards it to Facebook Twitter to let your friends know where your at. In a perfect world , that would be cool , however I think it's a little creepy. How hard would it be for a disgruntled lover or stalker to find you if you are broadcasting your location on the net for the world to see ?

Foursquare can also reveal a lot of personal information. When you first signup , you are encourage to sync your other social networks ( your Gmail account , facebook, twitter ) . Doing this allows you to adds the linked profiles to your Foursquare profile, which of course the “stalkers” can also view – even if they are not a friend .

I was going to make a super long post about this topic , however it's common sense I think – If you don't want information visible on the internet – don't put it up.

Hotmail has a new look

Written by on May 18, 2010 in Uncategorized - 2 Comments

The sometimes awesome people at Microsoft are offering a sneak peek this week at the new version of Windows Live Hotmail, which is scheduled to be released sometime this summer. I got a chance to look at it , and I have to say that I was impressed .

One of the new features that I saw that I liked was a new spin on an old idea. Many people still send images through via email , but as we all know , most webmail providers have a cap on the file size of which can be sent. Microsoft is now implementing a consumer cloud service ( no registration required ) which will allow users to "attach"  images to the email , and Hotmail will automatically convert the photo into an album. On the recipients side there will be a link in place for the viewer to see the image.

The Sweep function is touted as a simpler alternative to e-mail filtering, enabling you to quickly organize the e-mails that aren’t exactly spam, but that you don’t want at the top of your inbox. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s simpler than Gmail’s filtering options. ( see screenshot below )

The new Hotmail is also integrated with Office Web Apps, meaning that you can edit documents directly from your inbox. You can also store the documents and photos you send on Microsoft SkyDrive, which means you don’t have to worry about size constraints because your documents reside in the cloud.

But then there’s other stuff, like taking a Word or Excel document and uploading it to the Web version of Office so it can be edited and shared for collaboration. Gmail has been offering to upload docs and spreadsheets and so on to Google Docs for sometime. Likewise, Microsoft touts being able to run Hotmail through the built-in mail client on smartphones, the same way exchange mail can be routed into the device. That’s not new at all – web-based mail clients like Yahoo and Gmail have been able to do that for some time.

The company said the rollout of the new product will be done over several weeks this summer.

Ning Networks No Longer Free ?

Written by on May 14, 2010 in Social Networks - 2 Comments

Ning Becoming a Paid Site ?

Word on the street is that Ning will no longer be offering free websites , and instead will offer its services at a fee e( as of this time costs to run and maintina the site are unknown).

One month after long-time Ning CEO Gina Bianchini was replaced by COO Jason Rosenthal, the company is making some major changes: It has just announced that it is killing off its free product, forcing existing free networks to either make the change to premium accounts or migrate their networks elsewhere. Rosenthal has also just announced that the company has cut nearly 70 people — over 40% of its staff. Here’s the email Rosenthal just sent out to the company:

Team,

When I became CEO 30 days ago, I told you I would take a hard look at our business. This process has brought real clarity to what’s working, what’s not, and what we need to do now to make Ning a big success.

My main conclusion is that we need to double down on our premium services business. Our Premium Ning Networks like Friends or Enemies, Linkin Park, Shred or Die, Pickens Plan, and tens of thousands of others both drive 75% of our monthly US traffic, and those Network Creators need and will pay for many more services and features from us.

So, we are going to change our strategy to devote 100% of our resources to building the winning product to capture this big opportunity. We will phase out our free service. Existing free networks will have the opportunity to either convert to paying for premium services, or transition off of Ning. We will judge ourselves by our ability to enable and power Premium Ning Networks at huge scale. And all of our product development capability will be devoted to making paying Network Creators extremely happy.

As a consequence of this change, I have also made the very tough decision to reduce the size of our team from 167 people to 98 people. As hard as this is to do, I am confident that this is the right decision for our company, our business, and our customers. Marc and I will work diligently with everyone affected by this to help them find great opportunities at other companies.

I’ve never seen a more talented and devoted team, and it has been my privilege to get to know and work with each and every one of you over the last 18 months.

We’ll use today to say goodbye to our friends and teammates who will be leaving the company. Tomorrow, I will take you through, in detail, our plans for the next three months and our new focus.

Thanks,

Jason Rosenthal

Ning reports that it will be updating its current users with stauts updates on thigns to come , pricing , etc.Currently, Ning’s premium options include support (which has a $10/month and $100/month options for different service levels); Custom domains ($5 a month); Extra storage and bandwidth ($10 a month); Ad removal ($25 a month) and the ability to hide any trace that you’re running on Ning ($25 a month).

I predict that alot of users of the Ning netowrk will soon be scurrying to find another alternative.

Apple at War With Adobe

Written by on May 14, 2010 in Technology - 5 Comments

Apple Ceo Steve Jobs took a swing at Adobe's Flash technology for Web Video and games. The company is running asd in tech blogs and newspaper with saying "We love Apple"- with a bright red heart in place of love.

Jobs went on to describe Flash as "Outdated, unreliable and unfit for Appl's iPhone and iPad gadgets. In 1,685 word post about  2 weeks ago, Jobs talked about the reasons why Apple continues to ban Flash from it's mobile devices. Among the reasons where "reliability, security and performance," and the fact that Flash was designed "for PC's using mice , nout touch screens using fingers.:

But he said the most important reason is that Flash puts a third party between Apple and software developers. In other words, developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple only if Adobe upgrades its own software.

Adobe's ad — at 82 words — begins, "We love creativity," "We love innovation," "We love apps."

"What we don't love," it continues, "is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the Web."

The full page ads appeared Thursday in the Wall street Journal, The New York Times and several other newspapers. Online , tech blogs such as Engadget and Tech Crunch  as well as Wired also recieved a peppering of this message.

"When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers," they wrote, adding that Apple's "opposite approach" could undermine a future in which mobile devices outnumber traditional computers on the Internet.

Adobe would not say how much it spent on the ad campaign. For comparison, a full-page black-and-white advertisement costs $223,000 in The Wall Street Journal, assuming no discounts were given for running it over several days.

David Wadhwani, head of Adobe's platform business, said it's something the company feels passionate about because it enables a discussion over who controls the Web. And he stressed Adobe's stance that Flash "is an open platform, with a vibrant ecosystem around it."

In a statement, Apple said that it, too, believed in openness. The company said that is why it favors the emerging HTML5 programming standard rather than Adobe's proprietary Flash product for Web video.
